Superman is a 2025 American superhero film based on the iconic DC Comics character. Written and directed by James Gunn, it marks the first installment in the new DC Universe (DCU) developed by DC Studios and serves as the second reboot of the Superman film franchise. David Corenswet stars as Clark Kent / Superman, joined by Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced. The story follows Superman as he strives to prove himself as humanity’s protector while facing a scheme by billionaire Lex Luthor aimed at turning the public against him.
RDevelopment on a sequel to the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) film Man of Steel (2013) began by October 2014, with Henry Cavill set to return as Superman. However, following the troubled production of Justice League (2017), plans for the sequel were eventually shelved by May 2020.
By August 2022, James Gunn had begun work on a new Superman film. In October, he was appointed co-CEO of DC Studios alongside producer Peter Safran, and the two began shaping a new DC Universe. Gunn was confirmed as the film’s writer in December, and the title Superman: Legacy was announced in January. In March 2023, Gunn was officially confirmed to direct, and by June, David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan were cast in the lead roles. The subtitle was dropped by late February 2024, when filming commenced in Svalbard, Norway.
Principal photography primarily took place at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, with additional location shoots in Georgia and Ohio. Filming concluded in July 2024. The movie draws inspiration from the comic book All-Star Superman (2005–2008) by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, among other sources.
Superman premiered at the TCL Chinese Theatre on July 7, 2025, and is scheduled for U.S. release by Warner Bros. Pictures on July 11. It serves as the inaugural film of the DC Universe’s Chapter One: Gods and Monsters and has received positive reviews from critics. |
